Heroin
Detox
Heroin Detox programs are offered as part of a specialized
program at Shorecliffs Dual Diagnosis Treatment Center. Heroin
detox at the facility is done with specific heroin detox medication
under the supervision of a medical doctor. Medications used at
the Center allow persons detoxing from heroin or other opioid
drugs to detox comfortably and painlessly. The heroin detox doctors
at the Center specialize in opioid detox and use an advanced medical
protocol to provide clients with the most comfortable and painless
heroin detox available.
When first entering a drug treatment center for heroin detox, heroin
users are given a complete physical examination and assessment
of the severity of heroin addiction and withdrawal. Users are
given heroin detox medication to insure a safe and comfortable
heroin detox. Vital functions such as heart rate and blood pressure
are monitored regularly in drug rehab and heroin detox patients
are given additional assessments as needed.
Persons undergoing heroin detox often times make attempts to complete
the heroin detox process on their own without medication or medical
monitoring in drug rehab. Persons that use Heroin attempt detox
on their own for several reasons. First of all, many persons needing
heroin detox have a false sense of empowerment, that they are
not only invincible but can overcome any obstacles placed in front
of them. In a sense they say to themselves, "I got myself
in this mess, Now I can get myself out" Although such an
attitude is admirable, it is rarely realistic. A more likely scenario
is one in which the person attempting heroin detox feels powerless
against the pain of withdrawal and frankly becomes tired of being
sick.
Approximately 24 hours after heroin detox begins, persons detoxing
from heroin without medical supervision begin feeling withdrawal
symptoms. These symptoms include but are not limited to muscle
cramping, back pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, muscle spasms,
anxiety, breathlessness, lethargy, sleeplessness, and a feeling
of weakness. The feelings are generally described as flu like
symptoms, but to a much higher degree. It is at this time that
many people find the symptoms of heroin detox too painful and
give up.
