Outpatient
Drug Detox
Upon first contact by telephone Shorecliffs Dual Diagnosis Treatment
Center, you will be given an assessment to determine if you require
outpatient detox. Prior to admission prospective clients will be
interviewed to assess whether they are appropriate for admission
into outpatient detox. In some cases clients who are at great risk
for harm from withdrawal will be referred to appropriate facilities. These
clients may then return to Shorecliffs Dual Diagnosis Treatment
Center to enter treatment. Clients that are free of serious physical
and psychiatric complications of withdrawal may be considered for
admission.
Not all clients that enter outpatient drug detox require detox with
medication. The general rule is that the greater the age and levels
of usage, the greater the need for alcohol detox or drug detox.
Persons that drink daily to excess may require alcohol detox with
medication. This is to ensure medical stability and safety during
the detox process. The daily use of pain medication or anxiolytics
such as codeine, Valium, xanax, kolonopin, and other medications
may necessitate drug detox. Persons that do not drug or use daily
yet still have a problem may not require alcohol detox or drug
detox as part of a day treatment program.
In outpatient detox at Shorecliffs Dual Diagnosis Treatment Center,
clients are referred to a doctor for an examination. The doctor
may prescribe medication to clients to help them get through a difficult
time. During outpatient drug detox and outpatient alcohol detox
clients generally need time to heal and recover. Clients are observed
in day treatment by staff certified in first aid and CPR.
Depending on many factors, the outpatient alcohol detox or drug detox phase
of treatment may last from 3 to 14 days or as determined by the
doctor. Medications for alcohol detox and drug detox vary and
may be prescribed by a doctor to address each persons unique needs
and issues.
It must be noted that alcohol and drug problems are not cured by
detoxification. It is important to address underlying issues that
led to the problem. Alcohol and drug use is often a sign of other
issues. It is said that when people use drugs and alcohol that
they are self medicating. Statistics show that those who detox
and don't follow up with some kind of drug rehab program have
a very small chance of succeeding. Those that continue after detox
to complete some form of treatment tend to find success in recovery
and are able to remain abstinent for longer periods of time.
